Akbar Nasir Khan is a Pakistani senior police officer of the Police Service of Pakistan who has been serving as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Gilgit-Baltistan since February 2026. He previously served as Inspector General of Police for Islamabad Police.[1][2]
Education
Dr Akbar Nasir Khan has a diverse academic background in public policy, law, engineering, and business administration. He is an alumnus of:
- Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University (Master in Public Administration)[3]
- SOAS University of London (Law and Development Studies)
- University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore (Civil Engineering)
- University of Portsmouth (Doctorate in Business Administration)
- Islamia University of Bahawalpur (Bachelor of Arts)
Police career
Dr Akbar Nasir Khan is a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan. Over his career, he has held several senior command, operational, and policy positions.
He has served as head of police in multiple districts in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also worked in national security and counterterrorism roles, including serving at the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA), where he contributed to the development of Pakistan’s National Internal Security Policy and National Counter Extremism Policy.[4]
He was also the founding chief operating officer of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority in Lahore and has worked with international organizations including UNDP, UNODC, and UN Women. He served in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Sudan.
Inspector General of Islamabad Police
In May 2022, Dr Akbar Nasir Khan was appointed Inspector General of Police for Islamabad Capital Territory Police. He was transferred from NACTA and appointed under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973. During his tenure, he emphasized police reforms, technology-driven policing, and continuation of modern policing initiatives in the capital.[5]
Appointment as IGP Gilgit-Baltistan
In February 2026, the federal government appointed Dr Akbar Nasir Khan as the Inspector General of Police, Gilgit-Baltistan. According to an official notification issued by the Establishment Division, he was transferred from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), where he had been serving under the Interior and Narcotics Control Division.[4]
His posting was made under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973, and took effect immediately.[2]
