Air Silk Road

The Air Silk Road (Chinese: 空中丝绸之路) is a Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aviation cooperation framework centered in practice on a major air cargo corridor between Zhengzhou, Henan and Luxembourg City. The concept was proposed in June 2017 by Chinese President Xi Jinping as a means of strengthening air connectivity and trade links between China and Europe. Although the term is sometimes used more broadly to describe aviation and logistics cooperation under the BRI, it primarily refers to the high-frequency trunk cargo route linking Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport and Luxembourg Airport. The Zhengzhou–Luxembourg route has been described by Chinese and Luxembourgish officials as a landmark BRI project and an “aerial bridge” connecting Asia and Europe.[1]

Since the early 2020s, other countries including Georgia and Hungary have sought to integrate into the initiative by developing cargo hub infrastructure and signing memoranda on joint Air Silk Road development. Ferenc Liszt International Airport in Budapest has emerged as a key node for China–Europe e-commerce air freight flows.[2][3]
