Abhijeet Gholap is an Indian-American entrepreneur and film producer based in California, United States. He co-founded BioImagene, a digital pathology company acquired by Roche in 2010.[1][2] He later founded OptraSCAN, a digital pathology scanner company. As a film producer, his debut Marathi production Deool (2011) won the Golden Lotus Award (Swarna Kamal) at the 59th National Film Awards.[3]
Early life and education
Gholap graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay with a degree in biomedical engineering.[4] He later attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business.[4] Before founding his own companies, Gholap worked at Tata Consultancy Services and Siemens Medical Solutions.[5]
Career
BioImagene (2002–2010)
In 2002, Gholap co-founded BioImagene, a digital pathology company based in Sunnyvale, California, specialising in molecular diagnostics and automated tissue image analysis.[6][7] The company developed digital pathology software and automated slide scanners.[8]
In 2004, BioImagene acquired SciMagix Inc., a Silicon Valley image management company, combining image analysis and image management capabilities.[9][10]
In August 2010, Ventana Medical Systems, a member of the Roche Group, acquired BioImagene for approximately US$100[11] million.[12] [13]
OptraSCAN (2016–present)
Gholap subsequently founded OptraSCAN, a digital pathology scanner manufacturer based in Sunnyvale, California.[14] In 2016, OptraSCAN partnered with NantOmics as part of the Cancer MoonShot 2020 initiative.[15]
Film career
Deool (2011)
Gholap produced the Marathi-language film Deool (The Temple), directed by Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni and starring Nana Patekar, Girish Kulkarni, and Dilip Prabhawalkar.[3] The film won three awards at the 59th National Film Awards: the Golden Lotus (Swarna Kamal) for Best Feature Film.[3] [16] It screened at the Busan International Film Festival and the South Asian International Film Festival in New York.[17]
Other productions
Gholap produced Bharatiya (2012), a social comedy directed by Girish Mohite with music by Ajay–Atul, under his production banner Devisha Films.[18]
North American Film Association (NAFA)
Gholap founded the North American Film Association (NAFA), which organises an annual Marathi film festival at the California Theatre in San Jose, in partnership with the Pune International Film Festival [19][20] The festival features screenings and workshops. [21]
