Attack
On the morning of 22 January 2026, a 13-year-old student allegedly entered Lyceum No. 37 in Nizhnekamsk with a knife and set off firecrackers inside the building, causing panic among students and staff.[1] During the disturbance, a school employee named Alsu Anasova was injured and received medical attention for non-life-threatening wounds.[1] Russian media reported that the suspect may have also injured himself during the incident, and he was subsequently hospitalized.[3]
Trial
Following the attack, the Investigative Committee of Tatarstan opened a criminal case against the student. Authorities stated that the investigation would examine motives, circumstances, and possible contributing factors, including reports of a prior conflict with classmates.[2] Because the suspect is a minor, the case proceeded under Russian juvenile procedures, with specialists assigned to evaluate his mental and social condition. No publicly available sources have reported a final verdict as of early 2026.[1]
Aftermath
Local authorities praised the quick actions of teachers who sheltered students in classrooms and organized an evacuation of the building.[4] Security procedures at Lyceum No. 37 were reviewed, and regional officials stated that additional safety measures would be considered for schools across Tatarstan.[5] The incident also prompted discussions in Russian media about safety in educational institutions and the availability of psychological support for students.[6]
