The 1970 Watney Cup final was the inaugural final of the Watney Cup. The match was held at the Baseball Ground in Derby on 8 August 1970 and had an attendance of 32,049. It was contested by Derby County and Manchester United.[1][2][3][4]

Derby won the match 4–1, with goals from Roy McFarland, Alan Hinton, Alan Durban, and Dave Mackay.

Background

Derby County and Manchester United were the two representatives of the First Division in the inaugural Watney Cup. As a result, they were both drawn away to opponents from the Third Division for their opening ties. Led by Brian Clough, Derby required extra time to overcome Fulham at Craven Cottage, whilst United had a similarly difficult afternoon at Elm Park, beating Reading 3–2. In the semi-finals, John McGovern fired Derby past Sheffield United in front of a home crowd. Elsewhere, United survived another scare as they beat Hull City on penalties at Boothferry Park. It marked the first time that a professional football match in England was decided by a penalty shoot-out.[1][2][3][4]
