Špičák (also called Deštenský Špičák; German: Deschneyer Spitzberg) is a mountain in the Orlické Foothills in northeastern Czech Republic, near Deštné v Orlických horách.[1][3] With an elevation of 841 m (2,759 ft), it is the highest point of the Orlické Foothills.[1]
The German name Deschneyer Spitzberg is attested in older regional literature for eastern Bohemia.[4]
Geography
Špičák lies on the inner (Czech) side of the Orlické Foothills in the territory of Deštné v Orlických horách, roughly 2 km (1.2 mi) northwest of the village.[3][5] The summit ridge is forested, while an abandoned quarry on the western side forms prominent rock faces and locally open viewpoints.[2]
Geology
The mountain is built mainly of gabbroic rocks (often described as gabbro or gabbrodiorite), exposed particularly well in the former quarry. The AZROCK locality sheet documents the rock type and the quarry exposures as a key feature of the site.[2]
Quarrying and tourism
A large stone quarry operated on the western flank of the mountain and is now abandoned; it is frequently mentioned in local descriptions of the peak and is a common destination for short walks from nearby Deštné v Orlických horách.[3][2] The vicinity of the ridge also hosts small-scale winter sports facilities labelled "Špičák – Deštné v Orlických horách".[6]
