The Ścinawka Viaduct is a railway viaduct in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, south-western Poland, carrying the Kłodzko Główne–Wałbrzych Główny railway over the Ścinawka river near Bierkowice.[1] It is one of the engineering structures on the historic Kłodzko–Wałbrzych line, a railway corridor recognised in Lower Silesian heritage planning documents as part of the region's significant railway heritage.[2]

The bridge is a three-span steel truss structure supported on two piers. According to the local architectural and topographical register maintained by polska-org.pl, the trusses have parabolic upper chords, the bridge is 92.4 metres (303 ft) long, and it has a clear height of 4.8 metres (16 ft).[1]

History

The viaduct was built in the nineteenth century as part of the construction of the Kłodzko–Wałbrzych railway, now railway line 286.[3] In modern railway operation the crossing lies on the Kłodzko Główne–Ścinawka Średnia section of the route, which continues onward through Nowa Ruda and Głuszyca to Wałbrzych Główny.[4]

In February 2021, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe announced a contract for the rebuilding and strengthening of several structures on the Kłodzko–Wałbrzych route, including the bridge over the Ścinawka.[3] In that announcement the company described the crossing as a nineteenth-century steel truss structure whose historic character would be preserved during the works.[3]

Description

The viaduct stands immediately before Bierkowice on the approach from Kłodzko and crosses the flood-prone valley of the Ścinawka, a tributary of the Nysa Kłodzka.[1] Although the river itself is relatively narrow, the overall bridge is substantially longer than the watercourse, reflecting the need to span the wider valley floor.[1]

The structure forms part of a line widely noted for its demanding topography and concentration of bridges, viaducts and tunnels through the Sudetes.[2]
