Ágnes Hranitzky
Ágnes Hranitzky (born 4 June 1945, Derecske, Hungary) is a Hungarian film editor and film director best known for her long-standing creative partnership with her life-long partner Béla Tarr. Over several decades, she played a central role in shaping the distinctive visual and temporal style associated with Tarr’s films.
Film career
Hranitzky began working in the 1970s as a film editor on Hungarian films. Her collaboration with Béla Tarr started in 1981 and evolved into a close creative partnership that lasted until Tarr’s retirement from feature filmmaking in 2011. She edited Tarr's film The Outsider.[1] She has edited all of Tarr's films since then.
Unlike many film editors who primarily work in post-production, Hranitzky was closely involved throughout the filmmaking process. Given the extensive use of long takes in Tarr’s films (for example, Werckmeister Harmonies consists of 39 shots) editorial and rhythmic decisions were inseparable from staging, camera movement, and performance. The structural demands of these extended takes required her presence on set, where she contributed to decisions affecting the films’ overall temporal and formal coherence.[2]
Beginning with Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), Hranitzky was credited as co-director on Tarr’s subsequent films, reflecting the depth and continuity of her creative involvement in shaping their final form.
She also co-directed The Man from London in 2007. The film premiered In Competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.[3]
In 2011, she again co-directed The Turin Horse, which premiered in 2011, at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, where it received the Jury Grand Prix.[4]
Personal life
Hranitzky was Béla Tarr's partner in life since they met in 1978.[5] They also worked together until The Turin Horse.
